Williams' cool skills preserve unique art sculptures

Discover how our Multideck played a crucial role in bringing a Goldsmith’s art student’s unique vision to life.

At Williams Refrigeration, we deliver world class refrigerated solutions that are essential to everyday life, from keeping food fresh to protecting critical medicines.

Our commitment to quality and innovation has made us a trusted partner across various sectors. But every so often, a unique request comes along that allows us to demonstrate the impressive versatility of our products.

This was precisely the case when we collaborated with Evie Harrison, a Fine Art graduate from Goldsmiths, University of London, for her degree show exhibition.

Evie’s display showcased 1:1 sculptured replicas of machine parts cast in agar, a material typically used in laboratories to grow and study live culture.

Her vision was to encourage viewers to consider machines as living entities, with the sculptures displayed in various stages of decay. Her microbial project explored a fascinating theme of industrial and machine evolution, fictionalising a space where the mechanical comes alive, and then dies.

These sculptures were presented at the annual Goldsmiths University degree show on campus in New Cross, London - an event renowned for showcasing the exceptional talent of graduate artists and attracts a large number of visitors.

The biggest challenge for Evie was preserving the fragile agar sculptures at different stages of decay throughout the two week exhibition.

She needed a dependable and attractive refrigerated solution, leading her to approach Williams Refrigeration. Just like in foodservice or pharmaceutical environments, reliability was crucial, and our products are engineered to meet such demands.

We were delighted to assist, supplying an open-display Multideck R100 unit with a sleek stainless steel finish. This stylish, slimline grab and go merchandiser turned out to be the perfect solution for Evie’s dilemma.

"The multideck was excellent, in that it kept the agar at a consistent temperature, despite the fluctuations in weather and crowds," Evie commented. "Just as importantly, the stainless steel finish of the multideck, with its mirrored interior, was excellent for displaying and amplifying the impact of the sculptures. They were well lit, accessible for replacement, and totally visible to the public as they took in the room."

At Williams, we pride ourselves on delivering both exceptional equipment and customer service. Whether it’s for major brands or unique collaborations like Evie's, we provide the same level of care to every project.

Evie agreed, commenting "Working with Williams on this project was really amazing. Their eagerness to supply a high quality product that met the unusual specifications of the exhibition was great.

“We maintained a clear line of communication throughout which made me feel really secure in the process. When it came time for delivery, I felt confident that everything was in place to meet my deadlines." Said Evie.

“We were really happy to support Evie and help bring her vision to life,” said Tom Middleton, Commercial and Customer Service Manager at Williams. "I recommended the Multideck due to it’s excellent visibility and ability to perform in demanding environments like exhibitions. Once the product was agreed, we ensured logistics and delivery ran smoothly and within deadlines so Evie could concentrate on her art.”

The display proved a great success, with visitors drawn in by the sculptures’ intriguing forms.

Reflecting on the collaboration, Evie said: "The support by Williams totally elevated the finish of my artwork. I could not have produced such a sleek, professional outcome without using Williams’ products," Evie concluded.
